After Hours is synonymous for writers unplugged. I don’t have time for writing until after work, after I’ve driven home in the Kansas City traffic, after my daughter’s school activities or social engagements, after dinner, after changing the cat litter, after peeling off my work clothes, after I’ve done my part in contributing to normal society. Sometimes I write in the pre-dawn hours but mostly at night. My most original ideas are born when my mind is a blank slate, untouched by the clutter of news, facts, or general opinions.
After Hours is my time to unplug from the labels that society has assigned to me; mother, daughter, white woman, cyclist, you name it. My fiction professor once said, "Creative Writing is the one thing you can do where your life still matters."
